DUKE SETS TO EASE TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN KL
Karak and Ulu Kelang Link open to the public today

Kuala Lumpur, 9 January – The first phase of the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) was officially opened today by Works Minister, Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor. The early opening of the completed sections signifies the Concessionaire and Government’s effort in availing this long awaited expressway to the public in easing traffic congestion in the city. The remaining Duta link that consists of a 3.3 km stretch will be opened in April this year.

The 18-km long expressway serves as the vital missing link that provides connectivity to the east-west route of city, an important element in the Kuala Lumpur Road Master Plan. It effectively connects the new Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE/SPRINT) on the west side of Kuala Lumpur to the Kuala Lumpur – Karak Highway to the north, and Middle Ring Road II at Jalan Ulu Kelang in the east.

The DUKE is made up of three essential links - the Duta Link which runs from Duta and Sri Hartamas (near Solaris) towards the east, connecting to main roads such as Jalan Kuching and Jalan Sentul.

The Ulu Kelang Link continues eastwards from the Duta Link and crosses radial roads such as Jalan Semarak, Jalan Setiawangsa, and Jalan Pahang. The Karak Link provides access to high density areas including Gombak and Batu Caves, and will be an important gateway to Genting, Karak and the East Coast.

The Minister announced the government’s decision on a toll-free period for all motorists traveling on the DUKE for a period of one month effective today.

“Almost half of the DUKE is toll-free. Motorists will pay only once in each direction of the journey, regardless of the distance travelled or which interchange they get on or off from,” said Mr. Chua Soo Kok, Project Director of KESTURI.

The DUKE provides convenience and cost-effective connectivity to city dwellers and motorists travelling from the west to the east of the city centre. City-dwellers will enjoy an expressway that is well connected to all major roads in the city. Motorists will save time and money as they will arrive at their destinations in shorter time while avoiding congestions along city roads. For east-bound travellers on medium to long-distance journeys, the DUKE provides the most convenient link to and from the North-South
